The unit is essential for individuals working in operational roles where explosive power tools are used and is aligned with workplace health and safety (WHS) legislative requirements.
Performance Criteria
Participants will be required to demonstrate competence in the following areas:
- Planning and Preparation: Identifying task requirements, checking the suitability of the explosive power tool for the job, and ensuring all safety measures are in place before commencement.
- Tool Inspection and Maintenance: Conducting pre-operational checks, ensuring the tool is in safe working order, and reporting or addressing any faults or defects.
- Safe Operating Procedures: Applying safe work practices and following manufacturer’s guidelines when using explosive power tools to secure materials. This includes correct loading, aiming, firing, and unloading of the tool.
- Hazard Identification and Risk Control: Recognising potential hazards associated with explosive power tools and implementing appropriate control measures to minimise risk.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Selecting, wearing, and maintaining appropriate PPE such as eye protection, hearing protection, and protective clothing to ensure personal safety.
- Shutdown and Clean-up Procedures: Safely deactivating and storing the tool, disposing of spent charges, and completing site clean-up in accordance with site and environmental requirements.
