The RIICCM202E – Identify, Locate and Protect Underground Services course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely identify, locate, and protect underground utility services. This nationally recognised course is ideal for those working in civil construction, utilities, telecommunications, plumbing, and excavation who are required to avoid damaging underground services.

Identify, Locate and Protect Underground Services
This course focuses on safe work practices around underground utilities, including electrical cables, gas, water, sewer, and telecommunications. Participants will learn to interpret utility service plans, use detection equipment, and follow safe excavation practices in compliance with WHS and industry regulations.
Key learning outcomes include:
- Understanding WHS requirements and duty of care when working near underground services.
- Identifying and interpreting utility service plans and drawings.
- Using electronic service locating equipment and hand tools safely.
- Applying safe digging techniques and protective measures around underground assets.
- Communicating with asset owners and following “Dial Before You Dig” protocols.
- Implementing risk controls and emergency procedures.
Pre-Requisites
To enrol in this course, participants must:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Hold a valid White Card (CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry).
- Possess basic English language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills.
- Provide two forms of identification (e.g., driver’s licence and Medicare card).
- Wear appropriate PPE, including steel-capped boots, high-visibility clothing, and hard hat.
Payment & Booking Terms
Payment in full is required at enrolment and must be made at least 4 days before your course date to secure your booking.
STEP123 complies with RTO standards and does not collect over $1,500 in advance. Payment options include credit/debit card, bank transfer, Afterpay, or approved group/workplace invoicing. For those facing financial difficulty, flexible arrangements can be discussed prior to enrolment.
Refunds are only available for cancellations made 48+ hours before class (50% refund). Cancellations within 48 hours or after class starts are non-refundable. Refunds are processed within 14 days.
Reschedule requests made more than 24 hours before class are allowed once for free. Requests within 24 hours require a new booking and payment. If STEP123 cancels or reschedules a class, students will be offered an alternative date at no extra cost.
